Alchemy for solo piano (2019)
Alchemy is my response to a painting by Jackson Pollock of the same name, which I saw in the Peggy Guggenheim collection in Venice. What enthralled me most was how the randomness of the painting's construction could somehow be perceived by me as having form, direction, and a precise composition; the canvas seemed to be alive, and hiding from me behind its complex and chaotic surface something very real and visceral. As I stared into its depths, this underlying truth seemed to flicker in and out of my consciousness, tantalisingly close and yet persistently resisting comprehensibility.
Performed by Richard Casey, piano. Listen below.
