Taking as its inspiration the poetry of fellow Oxford student Annie Fan, Jonty’s ‘self portrait with rain’ (2021) is an exploration of musical intimacy. The textures are fleeting, fast-moving, ever-changing, slippery, the dynamics quiet, verging on inaudibility. What remains constant is the propulsion of Annie's words, which Jonty places front and centre in his setting.

‘self portrait with rain’ was awarded the 2021 Henfrey Prize for Composition, adjudicated by Judith Weir.
